Firm Roots Cancer Support Mission Statement

Firm Roots is a Christian cancer support organisation which offers prayer and spiritual support to people affected by cancer and their family and friends. Our mission is to walk alongside people whose lives have been affected by cancer, and to support them with God’s love. We offer prayer groups and retreats as a time to reflect, pray and be encouraged. We also aim to work with local churches to offer prayer and practical support for people affected by cancer. Our belief is that if you are rooted in the Lord God, He will hold you with His love, in the storm of cancer. Our motto is ‘Strength for today; hope for tomorrow.’

About Firm Roots

Firm Roots was started in Bristol in June 2012, by Helen Jones. Helen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, at the age of 40, and needed a mastectomy and six months of chemotherapy. Although this was a horrible year, it was a year in which God upheld Helen - filling her each day with just enough peace, hope and strength to face each day. Helen’s family, friends and church were also an incredible support to her. Since this time, Helen has had a growing sense of wanting to pass on the same encouragement, comfort and hope that she found in God, to other people affected by cancer and their families. Many people go through cancer, without the support of a family living close by, or of a church community, so Firm Roots is a practical way to support people and show God’s love.

Firm Roots aims to follow the calling of Isaiah 61: “to bind up the brokenhearted… to comfort all who mourn… and bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes” (Isaiah 61 v 1-3).

Cancer Prayer Support Groups now run in Lancashire, Birmingham, Chester, Huddersfield and Colwyn Bay and we are also linked to the Maidstone Christian Cancer Support Group. Please see the ‘Cancer Prayer Support Group Page’ for details of meeting dates, times and venues. Many of our groups are meeting virtually during the pandemic - so please contact the group leader for information and joining instructions. Firm Roots is keen to work with other churches to set up more Cancer Prayer Support Groups around the UK. Please contact us if you or your church would like to be involved.
